Background
In 2020, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy published its National Hydrogen Strategy. It provides the basis for the market ramp-up of hydrogen technologies. The strategy sets out a framework for action for the production, transport and use of hydrogen. In this way, the German government is triggering investments and innovations, strengthening the domestic economy and promoting international cooperation. South Africa is endowed with some of the best renewable energy resources (wind and solar, inputs to produce green H2) and an established industrial hub of activities in mining (PGMs), cement, steel, iron and chemical production and is therefore an important partner for international cooperation activities in this sector.
