South Africa and Germany promote their bilateral energy policy dialogue

The South African – German Energy Partnership drives bilateral cooperation to turn the energy transition into a shared industrial success. As regional leaders, both countries exchange expertise to foster secure, resilient and green energy systems. Together, they nurture joint innovation for future technologies.

Mission

The South African - German Energy Partnership aims at developing sustainable and country-specific solutions for dealing with the opportunities and challenges involved in the transition to clean energy. Built on successful and close collaboration, the partnership accelerates the expansion of renewable energy and energy efficiency and supports both countries in addressing their respective development challenges.

The partnership is guided by a mutual understanding that:

Energy security is a collective effort.
Clean energy and innovation drive sustainable growth.
The energy transition is the foundation of future success.

Partnership Structure

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the South African Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) lead the Energy Partnership. The South-African German Energy Partnership is supported by a secretariat which is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The Secretariat has a coordination function and follows-up the implementation plan of the partnership:

Facilitating intergovernmental dialogue: Promote bilateral cooperation through high-level policy exchange and strategic dialogue.
Promoting policy advice: Provide policy consultation based on expert analysis and unique country insights.
Connecting stakeholders: Facilitate and connect government, business, academia, and civil society to spark innovation, attract investment and ensure inclusive growth.
Sharing knowledge: Deliver research, studies, and workshops on global energy transition priorities.
